Combine that exposure with a lot of eighteenth and nineteenth-century building and the problem list writes itself. ### Salt-laden air and persistent damp Salt air holds moisture and finds its way into fabric, underlay and anything left against a cold external wall. In properties that stand empty between visits, that becomes a musty smell and, eventually, mould. We choose upholstery fabrics and flooring that tolerate the conditions and advise on placement, a small gap behind a sofa on an external wall genuinely helps. Rain arrives horizontally, sand comes in on shoes, and hall carpet wears in a narrow, obvious track.
