## What a carpet from Taylor's actually includes
A carpet is the one surface in a house that every person touches every day, barefoot, and it is also the one most often bought from a photograph. At our Keith showroom you do the opposite: you handle full rolls and large samples, press your thumb into the pile to see how quickly it recovers, and compare a wool twist against a heavy-domestic polypropylene in the same light before you commit a penny.

The service covers the whole job. We measure the rooms ourselves rather than working from your figures, plan the roll widths so seams fall where they are least visible, lift and dispose of the old floorcovering, supply the underlay and gripper, fit the carpet and finish the doorways with matched bars. You get one contact, one price and one company answerable for the result.

It suits anyone replacing tired flooring in a lounge, bedroom or full staircase; landlords and holiday-let owners who need something that survives high turnover; families who need a floor that copes with children, muddy boots and a dog; and older customers who want a soft, warm, quiet floor with no trip hazards at thresholds. It is needed when a carpet has flattened in the traffic lanes, when seams or bars have lifted, when a room feels cold underfoot, or simply when you are redecorating and the floor is the piece that dates everything else.

Professional help matters because a carpet is only as good as the subfloor preparation, the underlay beneath it and the tension applied on fitting. The same roll fitted badly will ruck, show seams, wear out in the traffic lanes years early and pull away from doorways. Fitted properly on the right underlay, it stays flat, feels considerably deeper than the price suggests and lasts the life it was designed for.

## What putting it off actually costs
Worn carpet does not stay a cosmetic problem. Once the pile is crushed flat in a doorway or on stair nosings, the backing is next, and a carpet worn through to the backing cannot be repaired, it becomes a full replacement of the room rather than a planned upgrade you chose the timing of.

Lifting seams and loose doorbars are trip hazards, and they catch on vacuum heads and stair edges until the damage spreads outward from the fault. Old, thin or perished underlay leaves the floor cold and loud, so heating works harder in the rooms you sit in most, and gritty dirt worked down into an unprotected backing acts like sandpaper every time someone walks the same line across the room.

There is a cost to waiting too. A carpet bought under pressure, after something has failed, is chosen from whatever is available that week rather than from the range you actually wanted, and it is far harder to spread the cost calmly when the decision has already been made for you.

### The mistakes we see most often

- Buying carpet on price per square metre alone and pairing a good carpet with the cheapest underlay, which halves how deep it feels and how long it lasts.
- Measuring your own rooms and ordering short, so the roll has to be seamed in the middle of the traffic route.
- Putting a soft, low-twist bedroom carpet on a staircase, where the nosings crush within a season.
- Fitting new carpet over old, damp or uneven subfloor and expecting the fault not to telegraph through.
- Assuming every quote is comparable when some exclude underlay, uplift, disposal, bars and fitting.

Our process

## How a carpets job runs, step by step

- Step 1
### Showroom visit and honest advice
Tell us the room, the traffic and who uses it. We narrow a wall of samples down to a shortlist that suits the job, and say plainly when a cheaper carpet will do the same work as a dearer one.

- Step 2
### Home measure and roll planning
We measure on site, check the subfloor and thresholds, and plan the cutting so seams land away from sightlines and traffic routes wherever the room allows.

- Step 3
### Written quotation
One figure covering carpet, underlay, gripper, doorbars, uplift, disposal and fitting, with credit options explained before you decide.

- Step 4
### Preparation and fitting
Old floorcovering lifted and taken away, subfloor made sound, gripper and underlay laid, then the carpet fitted and stretched into place and finished at every doorway.

- Step 5
### Walk-round and aftercare
We walk the room with you, check seams, edges and bars, clear up, and leave you with straightforward advice on vacuuming, protecting traffic lanes and dealing with spills.

What you get

## The difference it makes day to day

### Warmer rooms, quieter house
A quality underlay and dense pile cut draught from floorboards and soften every footstep, most noticeable on stairs, landings and upstairs bedrooms.

### Wear where wear happens
Specifying heavy-domestic grade for halls, stairs and landings and saving the softer constructions for bedrooms means you pay for durability only where it earns its place.

### Longer service life
Correct underlay, sound subfloor and proper tensioning are what stop a carpet rucking and wearing through the traffic lanes years early.

### One company, one price
Measure, supply, uplift, disposal and fitting come from us, so there is no gap between supplier and fitter for a problem to fall into.

### Spread the cost
Interest-free credit is available on purchases over £600. Terms and conditions apply and credit is subject to status.

### Safer underfoot
Properly gripped edges, matched doorbars and correctly fitted stair nosings remove the lifted seams and loose bars that cause trips.

## Carpet types, fibres and constructions explained
Most disappointment with a carpet traces back to the wrong construction in the wrong room rather than to a bad carpet. This is what we talk you through in the showroom.

### Wool and wool-rich carpets
Wool has natural crimp, so it springs back from footfall and resists flattening better than most fibres of the same weight. It is naturally flame-resistant, holds colour with real depth, and stays comfortable underfoot in cold Moray winters.

Wool-rich blends, typically wool with a proportion of synthetic fibre, add abrasion resistance and keep the price sensible while retaining most of the handle and recovery of pure wool. They suit lounges, bedrooms and dining rooms where appearance retention matters.

### Polypropylene and synthetic twists
Polypropylene is solution-dyed, meaning colour runs through the fibre rather than sitting on it. It is the pragmatic choice where spills, pets and children are part of daily life, because most stains sit on the surface and lift out.

Heavy-domestic synthetic twists carry the load in halls, stairs and landings, and in rental and holiday-let properties where the floor has to look presentable through a lot of changeovers.

### Twist, loop and saxony piles
Twist pile has tightly twisted yarn that hides footmarks and vacuum lines, the safest all-round choice for busy rooms and stairs.

Loop pile gives a crisp, textured, contemporary look and wears well flat, though it is worth thinking twice about with cats and claws.

Saxony and deeper velvet piles feel luxurious in a bedroom or a formal lounge, but they shade and show marks, so they belong in low-traffic rooms.

### Underlay is half the job
Underlay carries the impact of every footstep so the carpet backing does not. A dense underlay makes a mid-range carpet feel considerably better underfoot, improves insulation and sound, and extends the carpet's working life.

Different rooms want different specifications, a firmer, denser underlay on stairs and halls to stop movement and crushing, something more generous in bedrooms. We match it to the carpet and the room rather than fitting one product everywhere.

### Stairs, landings and awkward rooms
Staircases are the hardest test in the house: concentrated load on every nosing, in the same place, every day. They need a robust construction, correct grippers and precise fitting around winders and bullnose steps.

Bay windows, chimney breasts, sloping cottage floors and doorways between different floor levels all affect how a roll is planned and cut. Measuring on site rather than on paper is what keeps seams out of the wrong places.

### Homes, holiday lets and light commercial
Domestic rooms are specified for comfort and appearance retention over the years you will live with them.

Holiday lets, Airbnbs, B&Bs and small business premises are specified for turnover: heavy-domestic or contract-grade constructions, colours that hide the realities of luggage, footwear and cleaning schedules, and fast, tidy installation between bookings. We furnish complete properties, so carpets can be planned alongside beds, sofas and curtains in one project.
